The Social Construction of Adolescence

I thought this article went along very nicely with the Kumashiro article that we read for last week. Specifically, I enjoyed that the author advocated strongly for the rights and best interests of adolescence because it seems that they may be a group that does not have the ability to stand up for themselves and the issues that affect them directly. It was also interesting to me that he took a very close view at how the idea of adolescence was constructed by society and isn't a period of growth that can be simply viewed through a lense of phisiology or psychology. The notion that adults invented the period of development to help them deal with anxieties over sexual issues also intrigued me, especially when considering the fact that it seems adults project their problems onto adolescents instead of working through them on their own. On this point, the article also reminded me of Kumashiro because it called for everyone to rethink and reexamine the system in order to shake it up and benefit the group of people that are being adversely affected by old ways of thinking.
